Zachary is a research fellow in evolutionary genomics at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, investigating the origins, functions, and evolution of new genes in bacteria and viruses. He was previously a postdoctoral researcher in Munich and in Karlsruhe. In his undergraduate degrees from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, he majored in biology, philosophy, and economics. He is interested in the historical and philosophical development of a biologically informed natural theology which is integrated with the evolutionary history of life.
